Eugenio Turano, co-founder of Chicago area-based Turano Baking Co., came to America in the early 1950s with a knack for baking bread but nary a dream of what kind of role it would play in his life.
On Sunday, Mr. Turano, 66, of Willowbrook, died in St. Luke’s Medical Center Hospital in Milwaukee of heart failure.
Growing up in Calabria, Italy, Mr. Turano and his siblings often made bread for a large family, said his nephew, Ron Turano, president of the baking company.
Though the family was widely complimented for baking bread with crusty outsides and soft, moist insides, it wasn’t until 15 years after moving to the U.S. that Mr. Turano helped start the family bakery.
“He came to America for a better life, that’s all,” Ron Turano said. “He got that better life with his company.”
After Mr. Turano joined his older brother Mariano, who opened a small bakery at 6239 W. Addison St., in 1965, the two turned Turano’s into a major local bakery operating a plant in Berwyn, where it’s still headquartered, Ron Turano said. Turano Baking Co. now has three locations, including Bolingbrook and Bloomingdale, and 560 employees, he said.

Renato Guerino Turano (2 October 1942 – 5 December 2021) was an Italian and American politician and businessman. He served in the Italian Senate from 2006 to 2008 as a representative of Italian citizens in North America and Central America and was re-elected to the same position in the 2013 Italian general election.
Early life and private career
[edit]Turano was born in Castrolibero, Calabria, Italy, and moved to the United States with his family at age fifteen. He attended the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1962 to 1966 and returned in 1990 for a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.[1] Turano also held an Honorary Doctorate in Letters from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Turano's family purchased a small Chicago baking company in 1962, renamed it as the Turano Baking Company, and eventually built it into one of the largest artisan bread producers in North America. Turano worked for the company in his youth and became its president and chief executive officer in 1982. He served as chair of the American Bakers Associations (ABA) in the 2000s and led a march of eighty bakers to Capitol Hill to lobby for sector relief during a commodity crisis affecting wheat.
