Steven Michael Quezada is what performers call a quadruple threat — he’s an actor, a writer, a producer... and an elected official. The string that ties all of them together? Bernalillo County, N.M.

“My family goes back 700 years here,” Quezada said. “I’m mostly Native American, my bloodline is 23 percent Spanish — this is where our land is, these are our people and now in 2023, they’re all our people. No matter where you came from, if you just moved here yesterday or if your family has been here as long as my family has, we’re family now. I tell people, ‘You’re a Mexican now, you’re just a ‘new’ one, a New Mexican now,’” he said with a laugh, referencing the title of his 2022 stand-up comedy special.

Quezada never planned to go into government but has always been involved in the community — from working with a gang intervention program in his 20s to becoming the president of the governing council at his children’s charter school.

    Biography

Steven was raised on the West Side of Albuquerque. His strong feelings and love for New Mexico has kept him a resident for 44 years. In 1981 Steven pursued his love for performing at Eastern New Mexico University where he received his B.F.A in Theatre Arts. After returning to Albuquerque he found out very quickly that there were very few opportunities for Latinos in the Theatre Arts, so like they say, necessity is the mother of invention. Steven began writing plays for himself to perform in even though writing at this point was not one of his talents. Much to his disbelief his very first play was a huge success. "The First Chicano President" was sold out nightly. This motivated him to write four more plays with a great response. But if you know anything about Theatre in New Mexico, breaking even is the best a man can do. Money became an issue and he had to branch out to survive. In 1988 Steven started to pursue Stand up Comedy with great uncertainty, but again to his surprise, it was another lucky road in his life. Steven has been doing Stand up Comedy ever since and has performed all over the United States for many Comedy Clubs, Conventions, Organizations and has also been seen on TV shows like HBO's "Loco Slam" and
