Pascal Forthuny
French art critic and mystic (1872–1962)
Pascal Forthuny (24 March 1872 - 29 April 1962) was a French art critic, clairvoyant medium and novelist.[1][2]
Biography
[edit]Forthuny was born as Georges Léopold Cochet in Paris in 1872.[3] He developed his alleged paranormal abilities of automatic writing, clairvoyance and psychometry in the 1920s after his son died in a plane crash.[4][5] He was tested by psychical researchers such as Eugéne Osty and Charles Richet who were convinced he had genuine paranormal powers.[1][6]
Other researchers were more skeptical. Samuel Soal wrote that Forthuny's work was "not always above suspicion." During an anonymous sitting in 1929, Forthuny had pretended to obtain his name by automatic writing but it was discovered that he previously attended lunch with psychical researchers Eleanor Sidgwick and V. J. Woolley who told him the afternoon sitter was Soal.[7]
In 1930, an article in the French magazine Psychica accused Forthuny of fraud. During one of his alleged clairvoyant demonstrations he was said to have obtained signals from an accomplice who gave him information about his target.[8]

Jonathan Bricklin Consciousness Already There Waiting to be Uncovered William James’s Mystical Suggestion as Corroborated by Himself and His Contemporaries Abstract: ‘Is… consciousness already there waiting to be uncovered and is it a veridical revelation of reality?’ William James asked in one of his last published essays, ‘A Suggestion About Mysticism’. The answer, he said, would not be known ‘by this generation or the next’. By separating what James wanted to believe about commonsense reality, from what his ‘dispassionate’ insights and researches led him to believe, I show how James himself, in collaboration with a few friends, laid the groundwork for adopting his mystical suggestion as veridical. ‘Consciousness already there waiting to be uncovered’ — not ‘generated de novo in a vast number of places’ but existing ‘behind the scenes, coeval with the world’ — is consistent with James’s ‘neutral monism’, his belief that Newtonian, objective, even-flowing time does not exist, and his belief that parapsychological and other transpersonal phenomena had ‘broken down… the limits of the admitted order of things’.
