Chapter 1
Amaranth Anderson (née Christensen) was sitting in her chair at the kitchen table because she could feel another poem welling up inside her. So she picked up her pen, turned to the next empty page in her notebook, and began to record.
WE HAVE MINED OUR MOUNTAINS
We have mined our mountains,
we have fished our seas,
we have felled our forests,
we have gathered our grains,
but we have not yet embraced
the infinite energy of our souls,
which is love.
Amaranth had been writing poems since her early 20’s. Actually, as she had told so many people, she, in fact, had never “written” a poem, except for the one time when she was an Upper Middler at Andover and her English teacher, Mr. Fitts, who was a renowned poet, literary critic, translator of Greek plays, and at that time, judge of the Yale Series of Younger Poets competition, assigned everyone in the class to write a poem that would be due the next day. An Autobiography Poem is a great activity to allow the teacher to learn more information about the students in their class. It follows a specific format, which is outlined on the planning page.
What's Included:
- an outlined planning page with an example
- a page for the students to write their final copy on, with an example
- 16 student template choices (8 boys, 8 girls) that each child can select from.
Suggestions:
1- To model this activity for your students, present the example that has been provided or complete one with the students about yourself.
2- Once students have completed their rough draft, you will want to meet with them to discuss any misunderstandings or spelling mistakes. I have them place their rough draft paper in a basket, which informs me that they are ready to conference.
3. While the student waits to meet with you, they can select the student template and begin coloring. This way they are still working when you are meeting with other students!
Once the final copy is complete and the student template is cut out, simply have each child glue the template to the top of the final paper and you are done!
