DES MOINES, Iowa -- When Dina Manfredini of Johnston was born, she had 15 days to get her bearings before the first running of the Boston Marathon. That was in 1897 — and 115 years later, the world's oldest person and the marathon remain the same age.

On Tuesday, Manfredini became the oldest person on Earth, when Besse Cooper died in Monroe, Ga., at age 116.

At 115 years and 245 days old, Manfredini is no longer sweeping snow off her driveway like she did at age 106, or cleaning houses like she did into her 90s. At age 110, she left the West Des Moines home she had inhabited since 1939 and moved to a Johnston nursing home. A day after she inherited the "oldest" mantle, her family declined any interviews, to protect her privacy.

Much of her story is well-known, though, because her longevity was already attracting notice years ago.

Manfredini was born April 4, 1897, in Italy and before immigrating to the United States, lived in Pievepelago, Italy. She arrived on Ellis Island on Dec. 20, 1920, on the ship Olympic from Cherbourg, France, according to Ellis Island records.
